How to Use the XML Sitemap Generator
Paste your URLs and download a ready-to-submit sitemap.xml in under a minute — everything runs in your browser, with no signup and nothing uploaded.
Everything above runs entirely in your browser using plain JavaScript. Your URL list, any CSV you import, and the sitemap files it builds are never uploaded to a server.
XML Sitemap Generator: Turn a List of URLs Into a Valid sitemap.xml, Free, Right in Your Browser
Quick answer: Paste your URLs, one per line, and click Generate Sitemap. The tool builds a standard sitemap.xml with a loc, lastmod, changefreq, and priority for every URL, ready to download and submit to Google Search Console. Pro Mode adds per-URL editing, CSV import, duplicate and format validation, and sitemap index splitting for sites over 50,000 URLs. It's free, with no signup, and nothing is uploaded to a server.
A sitemap is the file that tells Google, Bing, and every other crawler which pages on your site exist and are worth indexing. Most site owners either skip it entirely, hand-write a handful of url tags and miss the rest of their pages, or rely on a plugin they can't inspect. This tool takes a direct approach: paste a list of URLs, and get back a real, standards-compliant xml sitemap built to the sitemaps.org protocol, the same format search engines actually expect.
There's no account, no watermark, and no page limit enforced by a paywall. Everything, from parsing your URL list to writing the final XML tags, happens in plain JavaScript running on your own device. If you've searched for how to make a sitemap by hand and found the tag structure fiddly to get right, this replaces that manual process with a form.
1How Sitemap Generation Works Here
Paste one URL per line into the main box. Click Generate Sitemap, and the tool parses each line, builds a loc tag from the URL, and attaches a lastmod of today's date, a changefreq of monthly, and a priority of 0.5, the three optional tags most sitemap example files include. The result appears immediately in a live preview, and the Download sitemap.xml button saves the finished file to your device. There's no server round trip at any point: the XML is built, previewed, and packaged for download entirely client-side.
2Simple vs Pro
| Feature | Simple | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Paste a URL list and generate a valid sitemap.xml | ✓ | ✓ |
| Live XML preview and one-click download | ✓ | ✓ |
| Per-URL editable priority, changefreq & lastmod table | — | ✓ |
| Bulk CSV import (url, priority, changefreq, lastmod columns) | — | ✓ |
| Duplicate URL detection with one-click dedupe | — | ✓ |
| URL format validation (scheme, spaces, invalid characters) | — | ✓ |
| Sitemap index generation past 50,000 URLs, plus manual splitting | — | ✓ |
| Download every generated file at once as a ZIP | — | ✓ |
Simple covers the common case well: a straightforward list of pages that becomes a complete, correctly formatted sitemap in one click. Pro is built for the messier, larger lists that real sites actually produce: ones with a few duplicate pages, a handful of malformed entries from a CMS export, or simply more pages than fit in a single sitemap file.
3Validation, Deduplication, and the Real 50,000 URL Limit
Pro Mode's Per-URL Settings table flags two kinds of problems before they ever reach your sitemap. First, duplicate URLs: the same address pasted twice, or pulled in twice from a CSV export, inflates your sitemap without adding any real pages. The Remove Duplicates button keeps the first occurrence of each URL and drops the rest. Second, format issues: anything missing the http:// or https:// scheme, containing a stray space, or carrying a quote or angle-bracket character that would break the XML, gets flagged as invalid and can be cleared out with Remove Invalid. The Validation Summary card in the sidebar totals both counts after every generation.
Splitting matters once a site grows past Google's documented sitemap protocol limit of 50,000 URLs per file, or 50MB uncompressed, whichever comes first. Pro Mode checks your URL count automatically and switches into split mode past that threshold, or you can turn Split Into Multiple Sitemap Files on yourself at any size. It then produces numbered sitemap-1.xml, sitemap-2.xml files sized to your chosen maximum, plus a single sitemap_index.xml that references all of them, the same two-tier structure large sites use in production.
4Common Reasons People Generate a Sitemap
None of these need a developer on standby or a CMS plugin with its own settings panel to learn. A list of URLs, exported from a CMS, crawled from an existing site, or typed by hand, is enough to produce a sitemap ready to submit the same session.
5Sitemap Index Files: When and Why to Split
A sitemap index file is simply a sitemap that lists other sitemaps instead of listing pages directly: a sitemapindex root element containing one sitemap entry per file, each with its own loc and lastmod. Search engines read the index first, then crawl each listed file in turn. Pro Mode builds this structure automatically, and lets you set a custom base URL so the index file's links point at your real domain instead of bare filenames, since a sitemap index uploaded with relative paths won't resolve correctly once it's live on your server.
Every URL you paste, every row in a CSV you import, and every sitemap or sitemap index file this tool builds is processed entirely by JavaScript running in your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, logged, or transmitted to a server at any point, in Simple Mode or Pro Mode, and the ZIP download is assembled locally as well.
6Frequently Asked Questions
Built to the real sitemaps.org protocol. The urlset and sitemapindex structure this tool generates, and the 50,000 URL / 50MB per-file limit it splits against, match the sitemap protocol as documented by Google Search Central's guide to building and submitting a sitemap, rather than an arbitrary or estimated figure.
