Keyword Density Checker: See Real Word and Phrase Frequency, Free, Right in Your Browser

Quick answer: Paste your content and click Analyze to get a real word count and a top-10 single-word density table, with common stop-words excluded by default. Switch to Pro for 2-word and 3-word phrase density tables, a target-keyword density and placement check, a content-length recommendation, and CSV export. All free, with no signup, and nothing you paste is ever uploaded.

A keyword density checker answers one practical question: out of every word in your content, how much of it is your target keyword or phrase, as an actual percentage. Writers often guess at this, repeating a term because it feels important or avoiding it because it feels repetitive, without ever checking the real number. This tool removes the guesswork: paste your draft, and it counts every word and phrase for you, the same way a search engine's own text-processing step would.

Everything here is plain, countable logic rather than a black box. Single-word density is calculated by dividing how many times a word appears by the total word count. Phrase density works the same way across 2-word and 3-word windows. Target-keyword matching checks the exact phrase you type, case-insensitively, and reports where it shows up: in your first 100 words, in any markdown-style "#" heading, and highlighted directly inside your pasted content.

1How the Density Calculation Actually Works

Press Analyze and the tool first tokenizes your content: it lowercases the text, strips punctuation, and splits it into individual words. From there, single-word density excludes roughly 100 common English stop-words (like "the", "and", "of", and "with") by default, since counting those would bury every genuinely meaningful word under filler. Each remaining word's density is its count divided by the total word count, expressed as a percentage, with the top 10 words shown ranked by how often they repeat. Switch Pro Mode's "Include Stop-Words" toggle on, and the same table recalculates with nothing filtered out.

2Single Words vs Phrases: Why Checking Both Matters

A single word's density can look perfectly healthy while the actual phrase someone searches for barely appears. If your target term is "keyword density checker," checking "keyword" alone tells you very little about whether that exact three-word phrase shows up often enough, in a natural way. Pro Mode's 2-word and 3-word phrase tables solve this by counting repeated word pairs and triplets directly, the same calculation applied to a sliding window instead of a single token, so you can see which multi-word phrases your content actually repeats, not just which single words are common.

Simple Mode covers the everyday check: paste content, see your real word count and top keywords. Pro Mode, currently free to use, adds the tools built for a specific pre-publish pass: confirming your exact target phrase is placed where it carries the most weight, and getting a straightforward word-count read against general content-length norms.

4Common Reasons People Check Keyword Density

✍️
Bloggers Checking a Draft Before Publishing
🛒
E-commerce Sellers Writing Product Descriptions
📄
SEO Freelancers Auditing a Client's Page Copy
🏫
Students Checking Repetition in an Essay or Report
🔁
Editors Spotting Overused Words Before a Final Pass
🚩
Anyone Checking for Accidental Keyword Stuffing

None of these need an account, a subscription, or a download, just content to paste and a couple of minutes. That's the gap this tool fills: a plain, rule-based density count rather than a bundled all-in-one SEO suite built for a different job.

5Target Keyword Placement: Density Isn't the Only Signal

A healthy density number means little if your target phrase only shows up at the very end of a long article. Pro Mode's Target Keyword Match is built around that gap: type the exact phrase you're targeting, and the tool reports its density, how many times it appears, whether it shows up in your first 100 words (a section search engines and readers both weight heavily), and whether it appears inside any markdown-style "#" heading. The matched phrase is also highlighted directly inside a copy of your pasted content, so you can see its actual placement at a glance instead of scrolling and searching by eye.

Privacy Note

Your pasted content, your target keyword, and every count and percentage this tool produces are calculated entirely by JavaScript running in your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted to a server at any point, in Simple Mode or Pro Mode.

6Frequently Asked Questions

What's a good keyword density for SEO?
There's no single official percentage. Most practical guidance puts a comfortable range around 1-2% for your main keyword in body content, with the number mattering far less than whether the word reads naturally. This tool shows your real density so you can judge it against your own content and topic, rather than chasing an arbitrary target.
How do I calculate keyword density?
Keyword density is the number of times a word or phrase appears divided by the total word count (or, for a multi-word phrase, the total number of possible phrase positions), shown as a percentage. This tool does that calculation automatically: paste your content, click Analyze, and every percentage in the results is computed this way, live, in your browser.
Does Google actually use keyword density as a ranking factor?
Google has never published a target keyword density, and repeating a word unnaturally to hit a percentage is treated as keyword stuffing, a practice Google's own spam policies explicitly discourage. Density is still a useful self-check for whether your content covers a topic clearly, just not a number to optimize for its own sake.
What's the difference between checking single words and checking phrases?
A single word's density can look fine while the content never actually uses the full phrase someone searches for. Checking 2-word and 3-word phrase density (Pro Mode) shows whether your target phrase itself, not just its individual words, appears often enough and in a natural way.
Is my content uploaded anywhere when I use this tool?
No. Every word count, density calculation, and highlight is produced by JavaScript running in your own browser tab. Nothing you paste is sent to a server, logged, or stored anywhere outside that browser session.

Grounded in Google's own published guidance. This tool treats keyword density as a self-check rather than a ranking lever, in line with Google's own Search Essentials spam policies on keyword stuffing, which explicitly warn against repeating words or phrases just to manipulate rankings.
