3Where the Plan Do Check Act Cycle Actually Came From
The most famous cycle diagram in business has a more layered history than most people realise. Physicist Walter Shewhart introduced a three step cycle, Specify, Produce, Inspect, in his 1939 book on statistical quality control, a lineage documented by the Lean Enterprise Institute's resource guide to PDCA. His student, W. Edwards Deming, expanded it into a four step cycle in 1950 and presented it to the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers. It was the Japanese executives at that seminar who actually recast Deming's version into the now familiar Plan, Do, Check, Act cycle in 1951, and Deming himself later preferred calling the final step Study rather than Check, since he felt Study better captured the analytical work that stage was meant to involve.
