📎 How the Cornell Method Works

Take notes in the wide Notes column during class or reading. Afterward, go back and write questions or keywords in the narrow Cue column that would prompt you to recall each idea. Finally, write a few sentences in the Summary section that condense the whole page — this last step is what actually cements the material in memory.

Cornell Notes Template — Free Online Maker, Fill In or Print

The Cornell notes template is a page layout — a wide Notes column, a narrow Cue column, and a Summary section — designed to make review, not just note-taking, part of the process. This tool lets you fill it in directly in your browser, or generate a blank version to print, then download the result as a PDF, PNG, or an editable Word document, with nothing ever uploaded to a server.

The Cornell Note-Taking System was developed in the 1950s by Walter Pauk, an education professor at Cornell University, and popularised through his book How to Study in College. What makes it different from a plain lined page is the deliberate separation of three tasks: capturing information during class in the Notes column, then coming back afterward to write prompting questions in the Cue column, and finally distilling the page into a short Summary. That structure is the entire reason it's still taught in study-skills courses decades later — it forces active review rather than leaving notes to sit unread until exam week. It's also why the format has survived the shift from paper to laptops and tablets largely unchanged: the three-part layout works just as well typed as it does handwritten.

Beyond the classroom, the same structure works well for meeting notes at work — the Cue column becomes a place for follow-up questions and action items rather than academic prompts. Many students also print a blank version specifically to hand-annotate on an iPad in apps like GoodNotes, or import it as a background page in OneNote — the multi-page notebook export in Pro Mode was built exactly for that batch-printing use case.

3Cornell Template Formats Compared

FormatBest For
PDF (blank, ruled)Printing multiple copies for handwritten notes
PNGQuick sharing, or as a background image in a notes app
Word (.docx)Editing header fields or the layout itself in Microsoft Word
Dot-grid / Graph (Pro)Diagrams, sketches, or math notation alongside written notes
Multi-page notebook (Pro)Printing a whole term's worth of blank Cornell pages at once
Privacy Note

Every header field, note, and export runs through pdf-lib and the docx library entirely inside your browser tab. Nothing you type — including full lecture notes — is ever transmitted to a server.

4Why the Cue Column Comes Second, Not First

The most common mistake with the Cornell method is trying to fill in the Cue column while still taking notes — writing a question the same moment an idea is recorded. Pauk's original design deliberately separates the two: the Notes column gets filled during the lecture or reading, at full speed, without interruption, and the Cue column is completed afterward, once there's time to look back at what was actually written and decide what's worth being tested on. That gap matters. Writing a cue question requires already understanding the note well enough to ask something meaningful about it — which is itself a form of review, done before the formal review session even starts. Skipping straight to summarizing without ever using the Cue column removes the step that makes the method distinct from a plain page of notes.

5Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Cornell notes template?
The Cornell notes template is a page layout developed by Walter Pauk, an education professor at Cornell University, in the 1950s. It divides a page into a wide Notes column, a narrow Cue column for questions and keywords, and a Summary section at the bottom, structured to support review rather than just note capture.
Can I fill out Cornell notes online for free?
Yes. Switch to Fill In Online mode, type directly into the Notes, Cue and Summary sections in your browser, then download the finished page as a PDF, PNG, or an editable Word document — no signup or software required.
Can I print a blank Cornell notes template?
Yes. Switch to Blank / Print mode to generate an empty template with just the column structure and ruled, dot-grid, or graph lines, ready to download and print for handwritten notes.
Is there a Cornell notes template for Microsoft Word?
Yes, in Pro Mode. Download Word (.docx) exports the template as an editable Word document with the same three-section layout, rather than a flat image or PDF.
What paper sizes does the Cornell notes template support?
US Letter is available for free. Pro Mode adds A4 and A5, which matters for anyone outside the US where Letter-sized paper isn't the standard — printing a US Letter template on A4 paper can leave the margins slightly off.
Is my Cornell notes data private?
Yes. Everything you type is processed and stored entirely in your browser. Nothing about your notes is uploaded to a server.
