Why the formula matters: A CGPA of 8.5 on the 10-point scale converts to 80.75% using the standard formula (×9.5), but to 77.5% using the Anna University formula (×10−7.5) and to 80% using VTU's formula (×10−5). These are meaningfully different numbers when you are applying for a role that requires a minimum of 80%. Always check your institution's official conversion formula before submitting any application that requires a percentage.

CGPA conversion, formulas and how this tool works
The most widely used formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 — the standard UGC/CBCS method used across most Indian universities. For example, a CGPA of 8.5 converts to 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%. However, Anna University uses CGPA × 10 − 7.5 and VTU uses CGPA × 10 − 5. Always use your specific institution's formula for official applications.
Anna University uses Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5. A CGPA of 8.5 converts to (8.5 × 10) − 7.5 = 77.5% — lower than the standard formula's 80.75% for the same CGPA. This formula must be used for Anna University transcripts and official submissions to Tamil Nadu institutions.

Most private sector employers in India require a minimum of 6.0–6.5 CGPA, so 7.5 comfortably exceeds the threshold.
