2The Rules That Trip Students Up Most
The et al. rule catches more students than any other part of APA 7, since older editions and other styles sometimes spell out every author the first time a source is cited and only shorten to et al. afterward. APA 7 dropped that distinction, three or more authors get et al. from the very first citation, every time. Page numbers follow a similar small but consequential rule, a single page uses p. and a range uses pp., and for sources with no page numbers at all, most commonly webpages, a paragraph number with para. is the accepted substitute when quoting directly.
3Where APA Style Actually Came From
It is a common assumption that APA style was built entirely by psychologists, for psychologists, but the founding group was broader than that. According to the American Psychological Association's own history of APA Style, the style originated in 1929 when a committee that included psychologists, anthropologists and business managers convened to solve a shared, practical problem, manuscripts arriving for publication in wildly inconsistent formats made journals harder to review and compare.
